Grocery Lists

A Photo Essay

By Alice Gilbert

The grocery list: a seemingly mundane errand companion. Most of us write them on our phones, or if we’re feeling bold, in our brains. Even bolder, we forgo the list entirely, letting the aisles guide us. I spent a weekend asking people carrying physical lists if I could see, and photograph, these small windows into their eating habits. Some were eager to share, while some double and triple-checked to make sure they hadn’t written their Social Security number. Or, God forbid, tampons. What can we learn about people from their shopping lists? As it turns out, quite a lot.
